The Story

Tristan Wolfe has built a life on being the man nobody can fool. At City Hall people have a healthy fear of him, and he likes it that way. It gets everyone down to brass tacks.
Then something begins to move against him, and not all of it is of this world. In the deepest part of the night, a presence he cannot name settles over his bed and roars. In daylight, the people closest to him are not all who they seem, his aunt Circe least of all.
From North Carolina to Panama, with memories reaching back to Lithuania, Tristan is driven into exile and into the wilderness, toward the choice every man eventually faces: surrender, or be broken. And somewhere on that road is Isolt, the love he never got over.

Part odyssey, part spiritual warfare, part love story, The Epic of Elquetumba is a novel about integrity when everything goes wrong, the cost of faith when nothing proves it right, and what is revealed when evil walks into an ordinary life.

Editor’s Note

From the Editor's Desk

“This thing has teeth. It’s going to challenge people and paradigms. It has a rock-solid protagonist, an antagonist almost too awful to be real, moral clarity that doesn’t waver, and a bold conviction that carries weight. The spiritual thread is not tacked on; it’s part of the fight, part of the identity, part of the narrator’s survival. That’s rare. The narrative is unfiltered and raw, just like the real world, and that is exactly what gives it power. This story moves and I was surprised how quickly I was immersed by it. By the third chapter I couldn’t stop reading.”

In the Deepest Part of the Night

In the deepest part of the night, Tristan was awakened by an evil presence hanging over his bed face to face with him. He felt a heavy weight upon his body and couldn’t move. Don Gato scattered under the bed. There it was again, the massive all-pervasive, other-worldly terror hovering over Tristan; and he was afraid. One cannot feel such massive evil and not be filled with terror. Shivers ran through his whole body. He could see the outline of a face almost transparent—its face like a dragon, or something prehistoric; and it roared hot breath all over him. The roar he had heard before; a roaring so powerful, so preternatural.

Twenty-Seven Years

Tristan looked around and said, “This is where we broke the ice, what, twenty-seven years ago?”
“O—h you broke me alright, and I’ve never been the same. By the way, I stole your gym shorts and slept in them every night for twelve years until they were so old I had to trash them. I stole your white jeans because they were too damn hot and I didn’t want the women to have you.”
“Oh yeah! That explains where my jeans disappeared to!”
“Yeah!” said Isolt.
“I hate you.”
“I hate you too,” said Isolt.
“Good,” said Tristan, “we’re even then.”
